By 2005 the Design Indaba brand had stabilised as a cornerstone of South Africa’s creative landscape. The Design Indaba workshops continued to expose scholars around the country to leading international designers, the Design Indaba magazine continued to win awards, and, each year, the number and calibre of speakers at the event itself continued to increase.
Following the runaway success of the first Design Indaba Expo, the second edition was refined and amplified even more, displaying the best in everything, from homeware to multimedia.
Maintaining its conscientising, contemporary ideals, the Design Indaba also responded to a pressing social need to bolster the local architecture, fashion and jewellery sectors. Individual Specialist Indabas were launched for each of these and local and international designers in the respective fields debated the contribution of these creative sectors to the South African economy.
