Silvio Rech and Lesley Carstens

Architects Silvio Rech and Lesley Carstens have spent the past 14 years developing a "hand-crafted haute couture" body of work in Africa.

Part of their design philosophy has been to live on site in exotic locations, doing one project at a time, developing a total design and creating a new language of architecture and lifestyle particular to each situation. Most of the works have included an element of transfer of skills to the local African communities from the core team of builders that they've gathered from all over Africa.

Works prior to 1993 were of a modern nature in large cities in South Africa. Since then, they've created Makalali Bush Camp, winner of the Most Innovative Hotel Design of the Year from Tatler Travel; Ngorongoro Crater Lodge; House Westcliff; North Island and many more. All garnered awards and were published widely.
