Design Indaba Expo

25 Feb 2011 - 27 Feb 2011

Design Indaba Expo is a 100% local-is-lekker celebration of South Africa’s ingrained creativity. Advertising, architecture, craft, décor, film, fashion, graphic design, interior design, jewellery, new media, publishing, product design and visual media, are all presented shoulder-to-shoulder.

Design Indaba Expo 2010 from Design Indaba on Vimeo.

Each of the over 260 exhibitors is evaluated and endorsed by an advisory panel of top South African designers, stylists, critics and industry experts. Setting a high curatorial standard, all products are original, contemporary and innovative, not to mention conceived and manufactured in South Africa.

WHY IS THE EXPO UNIQUE?

  • it is multi-sectoral, featuring advertising, architecture, craft, decor, film, fashion, graphic design, interior, jewellery, new media, publishing, product design and visual media.
  • it showcases the best of local design - original, contemporary and innovative product that is quintessentially South African - no derivatives, and no imports.
  • it is curated, not filled. Our advisory panel of the best South African designers, stylists, critics and industry experts, curates the Expo floor and decides who is represented there.
  • in addition to encouraging exhibitors to trade directly to the South African public, we also bring out several international buyers to stimulate the export market.

The Expo runs alongside the Design Indaba Conference.

The majority of Expo exhibitors not only recoup their costs through sales, they also make a profit at the event.

CO-EXHIBITOR FEE
We do not encourage exhibitors to share stands as this results in a cluttered display and does not promote the individual brands effectively. There is thus a co-exhibitor fee of R900. In other words, if you share a stand with another exhibitor we will charge you an additional R900 for the extra accreditation, registration and administration costs.

THE DESIGN INDABA EXPO IS:

A DYNAMIC INTERNATIONAL TRADE PLATFORM

Buyers come to Design Indaba Expo to meet new and old exhibitors, as well as interact with their existing suppliers. They are exposed to the current industry trends and exclusive product launches. They find new ranges, talk business and place orders.

International buyers we have welcomed to the Design Indaba Expo have represented the likes of : Walmart, Antropologie and Gap (USA), the Conran Store and Gilchrist Designs (UK), Galeries Lafayette and Mahatsara (France), Rainbow Gallery and Globus (Switzerland), Becara (Spain), The Cape House (Germany), Isandi (Norway) to name a few.

STIMULATING LOCAL TRADE

As Design Indaba Expo only promotes creative products conceived and manufactured in South Africa, community development initiatives and fair trade products play a big part. Local buyers from major retailers and smaller boutiques nationwide who prefer to buy local at Design Indaba Expo include: @home, Beautiful Living, Hilton Weiner, India Jane, Me me me, Mr Price Home, Okha, Source SA, The Foshini Group and Woolworths.

  • Access to the buyers-only times when the public has no access.
  • A buyer’s pack with additional information and resources on the Design Indaba Exhibitors and Cape Town.

MAKING A SIGNIFICANT ECONOMIC IMPACT

In an external economic impact assessment, conducted by the University of Cape Town’s Graduate School of Business, the total contribution to the GDP by the 2009 Design Indaba is estimated at R191.9-million. Business orders of R113.1-million make the most significant contribution.

Young Designers Workshops

Design Indaba has put together an exclusive programme consisting of five different creative workshops to fill high school scholars’s long winter holiday with excitement, stimulation, exposure and new skills. As an advocate for the creative industries, Design Indaba encourages the youth to explore potential career paths by taking hold of opportunities such as this workshop series, which includes a ceramic workshop, a leather design workshop, a photography workshop, a food workshop presented by industry leaders and especially devised for the youth.

Pitched at creative high school pupils, their parents, teachers and friends, book your spot to attend any or all of the Young Designers Workshops.

*Parents are welcome to buy a ticket for themselves as well, if their child/children is/are enrolled for any workshop – this bonding experience is bound to teach both you and your children something about design and each other.
