Design Indabar

Part bar, part art installation, the Design Indabar is a mobile celebration of the spirit of creativity.

Design Indabar comprises two shipping containers that open up using hydraulic technology. Created by Design Indaba as a testimony to their spirit of unconventional creative and independent thinking, one container hosts a bar while the other serves as a multifunctional mobile gallery. Designed by Fly Pitcher in collaboration with Design Indaba, the interior and exterior surfaces of the Design Indabar can be used to project art, film, design and the like.

Part bar, part art installation, Design Indabar represents the originality and creativity of the Design Indaba brand. The portable bar was built as an extension of the creativity showcased by the Design Indaba wherever it is held throughout the country. Grolsch, the Dutch beer brand, was the original partner for the concept (from 2010 to 2012), lending its independent and imaginative essence to the Design Indabar.

Every year, Design Indabar hosts a pop-up bar during Design Indaba Conference, in the form of a delegate clubhouse. It's located opposite the CTICC on the grassy knoll. Conference delegates are invited to meet at Design Indabar for a drink after each day of the Conference, and mingle with the speakers, exhibitors, sponsors and Design Indaba team, while enjoying some homegrown live entertainment.

Being mobile, Design Indabar has the possibility of travelling around the country, bringing the best in South African creativity and innovation to a location near you. This fun and unusual pop-up bar will help to spread Design Indaba’s belief that a better world is possible through creativity.
