Vince Frost

Vince Frost is the founder of Frost* Design, based in Sydney, Australia.

A member of D&AD, ISTD, AGDA and AGI, Vince Frost plays an active role in the world design community, regularly lecturing at colleges and conferences. A few pointers to his potential emerged in the early 1990s, when he became Pentagram London’s youngest associate director. After five years at the design industry’s best finishing school, he set up Frost Design in 1994. Since then, many awards have come his way, including D&AD silvers, golds from the New York Society of Publication Designers and gongs from the New York and Tokyo Art Directors’ Clubs.

In 2004 he made the move to Sydney, Australia, from where Frost continues to work for global clients and win international accolades. Frost's 30-person Sydney studio offers a diverse mix of talents – from graphic and multimedia designers to architects, interior designers and brand strategists. Working on a wide range of projects, including magazine and book design to corporate identity, environmental graphics and interactive design, Frost's approach is all about coming up with exceptional ideas, based on listening carefully to the needs of each client and coming up with a bespoke solution – making each project the very best it can be. 2004 also saw Frost speaking at the annual Design Indaba Conference.

Frost’s innovative use of photography and striking typography has been applied to a variety of work, including the award-winning literary magazine Zembla, The Independent newspaper magazine, stamps for the Royal Mail, advertising for ING Barings, TV advertising for BT, exhibitions at the V&A, promotional campaigns for Nike and setting up the look of the FT’s ‘the business’ magazine. In 1996, he was awarded Designer of the Year at Chartered Society of Designers and shortlisted for the BBC design awards.

Since leaving London for Sydney, Frost has been making his mark on the Australian design scene with a diverse range of projects from identities to magazines, interactive and books. This includes re-branding the Sydney Opera House; broadcast and identity design for Channel [V]; the new logo for Mushroom Records; a new identity and campaigns for Sydney Dance Company; the advertising campaign for Australia’s Northern Territory; the re-design of Australian Creative Magazine; French cookbook for Penguin; and environmental graphics and identities for Manta and Coast restaurants.

He continues to work with a broad range of international clients, including New York-based Rizzoli Books, Swiss Re Centre for Global Dialogue, Deutsche Bank Asia, Seoul International Finance Centre, London-based architects Sheppard Robson, D&AD and international hedge fund EIM.

Frost worked with leading Australian design magazine, POL Oxygen, to create a special issue called “Stretch”, featuring a collection of international contemporary luminaries whose talents and imagination stretch across design, fashion, culture, music, art and architecture. The edition won a silver for Best Overall Magazine issue at the New York SPD awards, gold at the New York Folio awards and won two IFRA awards.

His work was the subject of a major retrospective – Frost*bite: Graphic Ideas by Vince Frost – at the Sydney Opera House Exhibition Hall in January 2006. This comprehensive exhibition of Frost’s work was accompanied by Frost*(sorry trees), an inspirational book spanning more than a decade of award-winning work by one of the world’s leading designers.
