Jonathan Barnbrook's fonts Exocet (1991) and Mason (1992) are regarded as benchmarks of the pre-millennial style. Barnbrook's talents, however, extend beyond typography, his layered graphic style having given form and meaning to the artist Damien Hirst's print monographs. In 1998, Barnbrook received the highest award possible from the Tokyo Type Directors's Club for his work on Hirst's opus – I Want to Spend the Rest of My Life Everywhere, with Everyone, One to One, Always, Forever, Now.
"Fonts are one of those things that unconsciously show the spirit of age," Barnbrook commented after having been awarded the accolade most promising newcomer to typography by Creative Review in 1994. Other projects include designing David Bowie's Heathen CD, as well as work for the influential Canadian magazine, Adbusters. Kalle Lasn, Adbusters editor, described this punk-inspired prodigy as the vanguard of new English design as a graphic agitator.
