How to partake in Africa's biggest design event – wherever you are

With so much happening at the 2017 Design Indaba Festival, we can't blame you if you feel like you can't keep up.

In the week of 25 February to 5 March, Design Indaba will be exploding across the country in a mass of creative celebrations. Here's a brief rundown. We're going to be all over the world this year...

Conference and Simulcasts

The Design Indaba Conference is one of the best creative conferences in the world, held right here in South Africa, from 1 to 3 March. The full speaker lineup has been announced, and it's one for the books! See who'll be speaking here.

Run from the Design Indaba "mothership" in Cape Town at the Artscape Theatre Centre, we'll be hosting a plethora of events and exciting happenings around the conference, and the venue will be abuzz from early morning until late in the evening for the duration of the Festival.

If you can't make it to the official Conference in Cape Town, you can attend a live stream via the Design Indaba Simulcast in the following cities:

Nightscape

We're cranking up the volume in Cape Town...

The Design Indaba Nightscape is a full-on sensory experience crammed to the roof with incredible musicians like Daddy G from Massive Attack, Felix Laband, John Wizards and other legends, as well as exhibitions, activations and a pumping bar that will have the blood rushing to your head.

Nightscape will run at the Artscape (Cape Town) every night from 1-3 March every day from 17:30, and includes the Design Indaba FilmFest, Most Beautiful Object in South Africa and Emerging Creatives exhibitions, and much, much more.

Emerging Creatives

We've found the best young designers in South Africa... Each year Design Indaba’s Emerging Creatives programme brings together the leading young minds in the design industry, and gives them a platform from which to launch their creative careers.

Catch them exhibiting in Cape Town, Durban and Johannesburg as part of the Simulcast.

FilmFest

We'll be showing the best African premieres at FilmFest every night.Roald Dahl's Revolting Rhymes Roald Dahl's classic fairytales get an African twist in this animation, presented in collaboration with the Cape Town International Animation Festival.  The Happy Film is a visually arresting, feature-length documentary in which legendary designer and ex-Design Indaba speaker Stefan Sagmeister undergoes a series of self-experiments in his search for happiness. The Architect Who Saw the Future The late architecture legend Eero Saarinen's life is seen through the eyes of his estranged son Eric Saarinen, who goes on a cathartic journey to explore his father's greatest works.

Most Beautiful Object in South Africa

We're sparking thoughts about the meaning of beauty...

The Most Beautiful Object in South Africa is an annual competition aimed at facilitating discussions around beauty and the public’s perception of it. Ten celebrity influencers nominate what they think is the Most Beautiful Object in South Africa, and the public then votes for their favourite object. See the exhibition at the Artscape Theatre from 1-3 March (Cape Town) or view it online after the Festival.

Trend Seminar by Li Edelkoort

We're shaking up the fashion industry... Li Edelkoort is arguably one of the best-known names in the trend forecasting industry. This year will see Li Edelkoort's full trend seminars in Cape Town and Johannesburg, including a free pre-seminar talk for students.
