Home-brewed, future-focused
As Black Coffee proved on his South African Music Award-winning album Home Brewed, this DJ and producer defies convention.

Sidestepping Afro-house clichés and stage-managed highs in favour of restrained sophistication, Black Coffee's penchant is for true Afropolitan house: home-brewed but fresh and future-focused. To many, Black Coffee has led the ‘house music’ movement in South Africa.

Feast your mind on a different African premiere each night of the Festival. Never-before-seen feature films and short films come to life at the Artscape, where you can catch a drink, see incredible exhibitions and have a listen to the country’s (and the world’s) best musicians before heading in to see a film that no one on the African continent has viewed before.

Under the creative direction of Senagelese fashion designer Selly Raby Kane, the Artscape Piazza will host a wonderland of exhibits and installations like never before.

Our Emerging Creatives class of 2017 will have their debut exhibitions at Design Indaba Festival as part of Nightscape at the Artscape Theatre Centre.

“Underground Images” brings together more than 50 of the myriad posters created at SVA for display in the vast New York City subway system, offering a glimpse of the history of the College and the collective talent of its acclaimed design and illustration faculty. The exhibition was curated by SVA Executive Vice President Anthony P. Rhodes, who has served as creative director for the posters since 2007.

Beginning in the mid-1950s, SVA was in the vanguard of academic institutions in the U.S. to recognize the need for alternative marketing strategies to attract new students. SVA took to the platforms of New York City’s subway with advertising posters that were both thought-provoking and eye-catching, featuring the work of legendary artists like Ivan Chermayeff, Milton Glaser and George Tscherny. All practicing professionals on the faculty at SVA, they used the poster commission to explore what it means to be an artist and hone their own artistic voice. Like the College itself, the SVA subway posters have become in some way inseparable from the city as incitements to creativity and risk taking.

The 30 artists in “Underground Images” include Gail Anderson, Marshall Arisman, Gene Case, Ivan Chermayeff, Paul Davis, Sal De Vito, Louise Fili, Audrey Flack, Nathan Fox, Bob Gill, Robert Giusti, Milton Glaser, Phil Hays, Steven Heller, Mirko Ilić, Viktor Koen, Stephen Kroninger, Marvin Mattelson, Clay Patrick McBride, James McMullan, Jerry Moriarty, Tony Palladino, Stefan Sagmeister, David Sandlin, Paula Scher, Yuko Shimizu, Eve Sonneman, George Tscherny, James Victore and Robert Weaver.

The School of Visual Arts in New York City will be hosting the exhibition Underground Images: SVA Subway Posters 1947–Present on the Piazza. There will also be a talk by Beth Kleber, with an introduction by Aditi Khurana, on the history of the School of Visual Arts' subway posters and the legendary designers who created them (including Milton Glaser, Ivan Chermayeff, George Tscherny and Paula Scher, among many others) on Thursday at 18:30 in the Simulcast Theatre. As the SVA Archivist, Kleber is in charge of preserving the original posters in the Underground Images exhibition and documenting their history.
