Three second-place winners will each receive R50 000 for innovative design solutions that can be immediately implemented using the prize money.

Bringing design to Your Street Challenge
Most every designer will agree: Creativity can enhance the world around us. Now Design Indaba is asking Gauteng designers to really walk the talk, wave your creative magic wand and enhance what is right in front of you: Your Street. And, the four best ideas will be granted R50 000 to be implemented.
What do you drive or walk passed every single day that with just a dash of creative thought could completely transform your, your neighbours, your colleagues or even a humble stranger’s experience of Your Street? Is it a mural that inspires hope or brings together a community? Perhaps an innovative way to fill potholes or a slick solution to securing bicycles? What about a structure to assist your local street vendor or a system of garbage collection that encourages recycling? Not to mention a vegetable garden or a crime protection solution.
The Your Street Challenge, inspired by Design Indaba, is about effecting positive social change in your immediate surroundings and gifting your creative thought leadership in transforming the city. Dream big or small – the deadline for submissions is Friday 16 March 2012.
Adjudication
Bringing design to a corner near you, the Your Street Campaign is not only about being Proudly South African and Proudly Gauteng, but about owning your street, loving your street and improving your street.
Design Indaba will appoint its own independent judging panel for the Your Street Challenge to ensure the integrity of the process and make sure that all Gauteng designers have the opportunity to participate on an equal footing.
Proposals will be judged on the following six cornerstones of design for social change:
- Generosity: How many people other than you does your design solution effect positively?
- International excellence and innovation: Does your design solution stand up to and trump similar world-class ideas?
- Feasibility: How do you propose to allocate the R50 000?
- Fun: How much pleasure, enjoyment, beauty and smileyness does your design solution inspire?
- Do: Can and will the design solution actually be executed?
- A better world through creativity: How does your design solution make the world better and further inspire other people to make the world better?
All entrants will be expected to take note of these conditions.
