In the hope of changing the way the world thinks about prostheses, and how wearers see the world, Bespoke Innovations has designed a specialised covering that surrounds an existing prosthetic leg.
Bringing more humility to thousands of people suffering the traumatic experience of losing a limb, industrial designer and orthopaedic surgeon Scott Summit of Bespoke Innovations is giving amputees the opportunity to design their own prosthetic.
We envision the day when individuals are invited to participate in the creation of the products that have meaning to them on a fundamental level, says Summit.
Whereas prosthetics have always been one-size-fits-all, Bespoke Fairings creates custom-made prosthesis through accurately recreates a limb’s form through a process that uses three-dimensional scanning to capture the unique leg shape. Turning something ordinary into something amazing, the Fairings can be enhanced to suit personal taste with patterns, graphics, and materials, including leather, ballistic nylon fabric, chrome plating, and even tattoos. The custom-made prosthesis covering hopes to enable clients to emotionally connect with their prosthetic limbs, and wear them confidently as a form of personal expression.
Bespoke Innovations uses high-quality, durable materials to enhance the appearance of the Fairing, which is 3D printed using a strong, flexible and lightweight polymer. Metallised parts weigh a bit more, though the actual weight depends entirely on how the individual designs their unique Fairing.
Bespoke Fairing is a finalist in the Body category of the INDEX: Award 2013.
