Living Cocoon

A regenerative solution for how we return to the earth.

Loop Biotech’s biodegradable “Living Cocoon”—a mycelium and hemp casket that enables regenerative burials – allowing human remains to return to nature without the environmental burden of traditional burials . Developed by Dutch biodesigner and architect Bob Hendrikx, the Living Cocoon leverages the regenerative properties of mycelium, the root structure of fungi, which naturally decomposes organic matter and purifies soil. As green burials gain momentum, Loop Biotech’s mycelium caskets a dignified, eco‑responsible alternative to conventional caskets, progressing regenerative end‑of‑life design.

The casket is grown over seven days in a mould, without light or heat, forming a lightweight yet sturdy shell that’s fully biodegradable. Hemp fibres are added to strengthen the structure and act as a scaffold for mycelial growth. Once buried, the Living Cocoon breaks down within 45 days, enriching the surrounding ecosystem and creating fertile ground for new life. This living coffin not only eliminates the toxins associated with traditional embalming and hardwood caskets, but also accelerates the natural decomposition process.

As green burials rise globally, Loop’s mycelium caskets offer a circular design solution for how we return to the earth.
