Leading architects and designers tailor Ron Arad’s iconic Tom Vac chair at Clerkenwell Design Week 2014.

Ron Arad’s renowned Tom Vac chair gets 20 makeovers.

To celebrate the 15th anniversary of Arad’s Tom Vac chair, leading furniture brand Vitra invited over 20 leading architecture and design studios to reinterpret the designer’s iconic chair.

Vitra sent out a brief asking the selected creatives to explore both the novelty and the memory in design, art and architecture, which echoes Arad’s original brief from Domus in 1997, which saw the designer creating a towering totem pole in Milan made from 100 Tom Vac chairs stacked on top of each other. Participating designers were tasked to approach the brief as a pure concept, with no restrictions on medium or discipline.

It’s very interesting to see other people taking the same idea and expressing their responses. Inspiration comes from strange places sometimes, so it’s good to know that Tom Vac is being used as a starting point as well as being an end product, says Arad.

The full collection of one-off chairs will form a public exhibition titled Tailor My Tom Vac, opening at Vitra’s London space during Clerkenwell Design Week 2014.
