Monumental fashion

A collaboration between photographer Guido Schwarz and designer Lara Klawikowski was bound to be different.

A collaboration between photographer Guido Schwarz and designer Lara Klawikowski was bound to be different. “I saw her designs at the Design Indaba and just knew that I wanted to photograph them,” says the German-born photographer that has been based in Cape Town since 2006.

The Afrikaans Language Monument in Paarl may seem like an unusual location for a fashion shoot but Schwarz says it is not a political statement. “The monument has a stunning geometric shape and form combined with raw, exposed concrete that I have always thought would make the perfect backdrop for a shoot.”

As such, Schwarz finds the place quite calming, describing it as “zen-like”. He explains: “When people look at my work I want it to evoke an emotion. I want to encourage people to look at things differently.”
