Vibrant Housing Project

Monadnock Architects designs gentle density housing project in the Netherlands.

Monadnock Architects brings a fresh approach to social housing with Volante, a vibrant residential development in Hilversum, Netherlands. Situated on the former site of a care facility, Volante introduces gentle urban density, preserving the openness and daylight that define the neighbourhood’s character. The façade elevates the project with an expressive mix of vertical piers and horizontal bands made from colourful textured brickwork. This tactile palette—rarely seen in standard housing developments—adds depth and rhythm, anchoring the building within its urban context.

Designed as a thoughtful composition of two joined volumes, the building orients itself along a linear footprint. At its heart is a circular atrium—a light-filled communal space that invites neighbourly interaction. The façade elevates the project with an expressive mix of vertical piers and horizontal bands made from richly glazed, textured brickwork. This tactile palette—rarely seen in standard housing developments—adds depth and rhythm, anchoring the building within its urban context. The entrance, punctuated with decorative glazed bricks in contrasting tones and playful window arrangements, welcomes residents and visitors alike.

Far from a conventional social housing scheme, Volante is a demonstration of how architecture can balance functionality with dignity, and density with delight.
