UTOOTO

Yuri Suzuki’s Sonic Architecture features at the Camden Arts Projects

Yuri Suzuki’s UTOOTO, is a modular sonic architectural installation that encourages playful interaction. Featuring at the Camden Arts Projects, the installation invites visitors of all ages to become co-creators, building and reconfiguring a vibrant, sonic-scape from a structure of modular pipes and horns.

UTOOTO’s design is a sprawling network of pipes that act as the backbone, supporting brightly coloured horns at varying heights and angles—some reaching skyward, others hovering close to the ground, and many jutting out sideways. Each component connects via joiner pieces encouraging visitors to detach, rearrange, and redefine the structure. As you wander through the installation, the experience becomes interactive, visitors speak into horns and listen to sounds traveling through new paths they helped create, discovering echoes and acoustic surprises along the way.

Suzuki’s art is known to strike a balance between play and sonic exploration. The name “UTOOTO” references the Okinawan phrase used in prayer, connecting the playful construction of sound with a deeper, dreamy reverence.  This evolving, acoustic city underscores Suzuki’s belief: art and design thrive when open to collective creation, sensory delight, and joyful experimentation.
