Give a little sun love

Ross Lovegrove's Velux Sun Tunnel can channel direct sunlight into the heart of any room.

Ross Lovegrove's Velux Sun Tunnel can channel direct sunlight into the heart of any room.

Created in partnership with the Velux Group, the Sun Tunnel has been designed for spaces where the installation of windows is not possible and where an electric light would usually be the only option. The Sun Tunnel captures the rays of the sun and beautifully reflects them into the room. A diffuser allows for the adjustment of the light direction.

The Sun Tunnel is effectively a solar lamp which brings together aesthetics and functionality. Lovegrove wanted to create a product that would create a “moment of enlightenment” for users. He managed this while at the same time reducing the carbon footprint of the product. The Sun Tunnel is easier to install than traditional skylights and it’s easy to leak-proof.

Lovegrove is known to be a keen proponent of green design so his collaboration with Velux was ideal. The Velux vision is to create sustainable living based on high energy efficiency and to use the sun as a renewable energy source, especially in improving indoor climate. “When I was contacted by Velux, I felt an immediate affinity with its products and way of thinking that I find human, technologically innovative and democratic,” says Lovegrove.

The Sun Tunnel is already an award-winning product. It recently received special recognition from the Red Dot Awards as "best of the best 2010”. The Sun Tunnel will be launched in June 2010.
