Carbon cool

A bicycle made of wood? An interesting concept, and it's not bad looking.

From the Series

In terms of environmentally responsible modes of transport, bicycles get a very good rating. But Australian designer Gary Galego has pushed the eco limits and introduced the Carbonwood Bike.

Bringing together sustainability and fine craftsmanship, the bike aims to promote green techonology.

For Galego it was important to use a sustainable material. He found that by using wood “the design takes a very basic material and celebrates the artisan nature of fine making whilst maintaining a form conducive to cutting-edge wood manufacturing technologies”.

If harvested and managed properly wood is one of the most sustainable resources on earth with a significant carbon offset. Gary Galego’s Carbonwood Bike brings together sustainability and fine craftsmanship. The plywood laminations that make up the structure of the Carbonwood Bike are material composites of wood and carbon fibre. Wood is accustomed to enduing harsh condition and is often stronger than steel and aluminium. The wood for the Carbonwood Bike is from sustainably harvested trees and the veneers are rotary cut, resulting in no waste.
