Frank Tjepkema's Recession Chair is a designer response to current and looming economic issues.

Frank Tjepkema’s Recession Chair comments on what he describes as an “imminent economic crisis threatening Europe and the world”.

At the Dutch Design Week recently, Tjepkema was struck by the design’s world overall lack of reaction to the economic conditions that are prevalent in the world today.

The Recession Chair is Tjepkema’s response to contemporary economic issues, a skinny heir to his 2005 XXL Chair.

Tjepkema took an Ikea chair and sanded it down to a “skinnier” version. What remains is a skeleton-like structure that isn’t very functional as it would barely be able to carry the weight of an average-sized adult, “much like a society plagued by recession”, Tjepkema rationalises.
