Hide & Eek! is a unique bedtime book for children. Designed by Hat-trick and published by Knock Knock, the idea with the book is that children read the book under their bed covers in the dark, using a torch to lighten up a whole new world of magic.
Elephants in wardrobes, rabbits in hats, monsters under chairs and genies in unexpected places, Hide & Eek! has 20 illustrations over 48 pages with “extra” illustrations hidden within duplexed pages. These extra, magical, illustrations are only revealed when shining a torch behind them.
The concept for Hide & Eek! is inspired by the Victorian see-through peep show cards of yesteryear.
The production of the book was challenging, Hat-trick told Creative Review. As the illustrations are hidden within French-folded and partially glued pages, it has to be the perfect thickness to conceal the images printed on the inside. “We tried a lot of different colours and paper weights – we wanted the illustrations inside to be invisible to the naked eye, but to show strongly when lit by torch,” Jim Sutherland explained.
Hide & Eek! is the second collaboration between Hat-trick and Knock Knock who met at Design Indaba 2011. Their first collaborative project was Phobophobia, which we featured here.
