Hat-trick takes inspiration from the rich local history, culture and architecture of Stockwell, London for designing a wayfinding system for a new development in the region.

Renowned London-based graphic design studio Hat-trick were recently commissioned by the cultural consultancy Future City to complete a wayfinding project for the Stockwell Park Estate development in Lambeth, south London. Hat-trick’s main focus was to create clear, simple signage that would help both first-time visitors and residents of the estate to find their way without hassle.

The studio commissioned multiple local artists and designers to create a palette of patterns inspired by the rich local history, culture and architecture of their community. The result is a modular system of tiles, combined with the bespoke palette of patterns.

The wayfinding system gives a balance of both functionality and personality; the tile system allows the signage to adapt to a range of surfaces and configurations to suit the variety of surroundings the wayfinding has to work in, says Gareth Howat of Hat-trick.

The patterns have been applied across the range of signs as well as bird boxes in the estate.
