The top 10 stories from January 2015 shine a spotlight on illustration, fashion and art on the African continent.

The most popular story for January 2015 on designindaba.com was the story of two South African entrepreneur fathers who adapted a Finnish design to help low-income mothers look after their newborn babies. The Thula Baba Box provides mothers’ with valuable tools and hopes to lower infant mortality rates in South Africa.

As the annual Design Indaba Festival comprising a conference, expo, film festival and music event gears up; eight of the top 10 stories shine a spotlight on the astounding line up of events for 2015. 

The next crop of Emerging Creatives proved popular among readers with three features making it into the top 10. These included two lookbooks – one a showcase of five up-and-coming illustrators and the other a survey of four talented fashion designers. A next generation piece on Celeste Theron, who is empowering women to be entrepreneurs also featured strongly.

Other favourites included the announcement of the 12 designs selected to be part of the 2015 Most Beautiful Object in South Africa competition; a Q&A with Ghanaian musician M.anifest who will perform during Design Indaba Music; and renowned artist William Kentridge’s “Refusal of Time” exhibition hosted by Iziko South Africa in association with the Goodman Gallery.
