Nedbank's ‘Wet Socks Challenge’

Nedbank believes this is the power of creativity, which is why we are proud to be the banking partner of the Design Indaba for the next three years. Just like the Design Indaba, we want to inspire ideas for a better world. So imagine if at this year’s conference, we could come up with ideas for change, and then actually make them happen? 

Imagine if we could find solutions for one of the challenges facing children in the Western Cape? Every day, they must walk often over an hour to catch transport to school, but when it rains – and in the Cape it rains throughout winter – their socks get wet.

While this might seem small, the problem with this is that besides the discomfort, the combination of being wet and cold makes these kids more susceptible to illnesses like flu and pneumonia, which could mean they miss school for days.

In order for delegates to solve this problem, we developed an ATM with a difference. One that doesn’t take money, but that takes ideas.

Delegates will be asked to think up possible design-based solutions to this ‘Wet Socks Challenge’ and then deposit them in our Nedbank Ideas ATM.

All the ideas will then be judged by a panel of advertising creatives and some of this year’s Design Indaba speakers.

Each day, the top idea will win you an iPad Mini, while the overall best idea over the three days will get you an all-inclusive trip to South by Southwest next year: the film, music and interactive festival held in Austin, Texas.

Most importantly, though, we will make the winning idea for change happen.
