Law firm Adams & Adams is the winner of the “Sponsorship In-Kind Category” of the 17th Annual Business Day BASA Awards, which recognises and encourages excellence and innovation in the field of business support of the arts. The firm is recognised for its sponsorship of Design Indaba.
Michelle Constant, CEO of BASA, is enthusiastic about the firm’s participation in the awards. “Adams & Adams has, with its diverse partnerships, become integral to the concept of shared value in the arts sector. We are proud to have them as a member of BASA and congratulate them on their win at this year's Awards.”
To some, the partnership between a law practice and a multi-disciplinary creative platform such as Design Indaba may seem rather tenuous. To Adams & Adams this is an integral part of years of promoting and protecting the intellectual property (IP) rights of the flourishing South African creative industry.
“The award celebrates the firm’s unique three-year-long collaboration with Design Indaba,” says Mariëtte du Plessis, senior partner at Adams & Adams. “We believe Design Indaba has become a force to be reckoned with and that it has become imperative that an initiative which has become a motivator of such an economic shift and collective benefit is protected from a legal perspective. Adams & Adams has provided advice - both in terms of general legal services and intellectual property (IP), not only to Design Indaba itself but also to the winner of the Adams & Adams Innovation Award and to a multitude of exhibitors at the Design Indaba Expo.”
Founder and managing director of Design Indaba – Ravi Naidoo views the partnership between Adams & Adams and Design Indaba as a vote of confidence for the growth prospects of the creative industry in South Africa. “They have provided invaluable legal advice to the hundreds of SMMEs, who exhibited at Design Indaba, a platform that has contributed R1, 7 billion to the economy in the past five years. They understand the commercial power of creativity and the importance of protecting designers' work. They have played an integral role for us as a company too by supporting our platform with legal services.”
Adams & Adams aims to further build and develop relationships between the firm and the creative industry both locally and globally, by providing continual support, and protection of design, copyright, trade marks and all other intellectual property.
