Umbro team up with artists for World Champions Collection

In celebration of the 2010 FIFA World Cup, Umbro invited seven creatives to design the World Champions Collection.

Umbro approached designers from the seven countries that have ever won the FIFA World Cup and commissioned them to design a crest for the Umbro England home shirt.

The twist to the brief was that each artist had to represent their own country’s football culture on this crest, based on the tailored silhouette of the Umbro England home shirt. The result: Original and refreshing designs depicting the football culture of Argentina, Brazil, England, France, Germany, Italy and Uruguay.

Victory designs

  • Argentina’s crest, designed by ZZK Records, combines a love of eclectic music with a recognisable design identity.
  • Illustrator, visual artist and tattoo designer, Fernando Chamarelli’s crest design connects the symbols and legends of Brazilian culture, honouring the five-time winners of the World Cup.
  • Ben Eine, UK street and graffiti artist, wanted to show England as a strong and brave team.
  • French graffiti artist turned fashion authority, Andre, designed the French crest as a fresh and modern take on the Eiffel Tower.
  • German artist and publisher, Thomas Maracki (Marok) wanted the crest to bolster team spirit. The dredger and stars are symbolic while the sausage in the crest is only slightly tongue-in-cheek.
  • Italian comics author, illustrator and artist, Tanino Liberatore’s crest celebrates Italy’s long history of gladiator-like athletes and their spiritual home. The Italian crest is also an analogy of the team going to battle to defend their 2006 World Cup title.
  • Mixed-media artist, Martin Albronoz, created a crest celebrating Uruguay’s legendary 1950 victory against Brazil.
