Shakespeare on a stamp

Hat-trick have designed a range of postage stamps for the Royal Mail, commemorating the 50th anniversary of the Royal Shakespeare Company.

Paying tribute to a company with such cultural credentials as the Royal Shakespeare Company is no small task. Even if the platform for doing so is really small.

Hat-trick were recently commissioned by the Royal Mail to design a set of postage stamps, celebrating the 50th anniversary of the Royal Shakespeare Company. And despite the obvious limitations, they very successfully fulfilled the brief to make the sets in distinctly different styles.

The first set of stamps are more dramatic, featuring photos from famous productions with illustrator Marion Deuchar’s hand-lettered typography. The second set of stamps features characters from various Shakespeare plays on a mini stage set. Hat-trick built these sets with illustrator Rebecca Sutherland, and based it on Stratford-upon-Avon’s four main theatres.
