Raw reality

Hamed Design Studio creates exquisite furniture pieces that expose the raw realities of Africa in a contemporary way.

Part of the Project

Exposing the raw realities of Africa, Hamed Ouattara of Hamed Design’s rustic chairs are both an artwork and a statement piece.

Hailing from Burkina Faso in Africa, Hamed Design Studio’s signature style sees mixed-media creations that expose the realities of modern Africa.

My goal is to provide a key point in a continent, which suffers from imports and all kinds of imitation furniture, especially of poor quality that does not reflect our culture, says Ouattara.

Although also a painter, Ouattara prefers to work in the field of furniture design where he creates beautiful pieces made from salvaged metal sheets and frames, which are joined together using metal welding techniques.

The furniture pieces, ranging from chairs to cabinets, stools and tables, retain a patina of previous incarnation while being transformed into contemporary, clean furniture.

Hamed Design Studio’s Metal Chair was on display at Design Indaba Expo’s groundbreaking Africa is Now exhibition under the theme “Africa is Transformed”, which looked at how African creative apply a singular, make-do approach to materiality, to transform what is at hand into unexpected objects and designs that delight.
