Powerful opera

The new Welsh National Opera identity launches today and it’s designed by Hat-trick!

Drawing on the idea of the power of opera to transform lives, Hat-trick have designed a new identity for the Welsh National Opera (WNO).

The new logotype is based on a bold painted brushstroke in the form of an “O”, together with simple typography. The brushstrokes can be seen throughout the identity to transform images, and as a reflection of the passion and unique stories surrounding the operas.

In something of a lucky coincidence (the WNO director knows Hogkin), abstract artist Howard Hodgkin did an original painting based on the identity. This particular painting is being used on the cover of the opera’s season book. All the other paintings and brushstrokes were done by Rebecca Sutherland and Sarah Harrison.

A key element of the visual identity, the brushstrokes have also been used to adapt photographs and paintings, transforming these images to reflect the passion of opera.

Hat-trick worked with Jane Wentworth Associates, which developed the strategy. Hat-trick also designed the new website, which was developed by Tincan.
