Chop chop

What do you get when you put 8 000 chopsticks, 4 000 joints and 2 000 rings together? Two seats for the prices of one!

The Sofa_xxxx is the brainchild of German-based designer and Design Academy Eindhoven graduate Yuya Ushida. Constructed from a ridiculous number of chopsticks, the Sofa_xxxx is an expandable and retractable seating unit that goes from chair to couch with a simple pull.

Ushida individually cut each of the 8 000 chopsticks into four different lengths. The wooden sticks were then sanded to ensure the angles needed for the construction of the couch.

Inspired by the beauty of simple geometrical structures like the Eiffel Tower, Ushida wanted to translate this kind of repetition into furniture.

The rings and joints that work to connect the chopsticks also help with flexibility and adaptability. While the project took about three months to complete, the Sofa_xxxx can now comfortably seat three people of 70kg each! Ushida does mention that he had some help from his friends.
