Japanese designer Tokujin Yoshioka has an unusual approach to furniture design. To be launched at the 2010 Milan Furniture Fair, Yoshioka’s Living Crystal Chandelier was grown in a mineral bath mixed with Swarovski crystals. The crystals cluster around a network of polyester fibers and then multiply. Yoshioka plays music while the crystal is forming. This helps to gently guide the form of the crystal.
Yoshioka has also introduced a line of "invisible" furniture to be showcased at the fair. The polycarbonate plastic used in the design makes it appear invisible and feel like you are floating. Memory is a special chair made from recycled aluminium and can be shaped to the user’s needs. Other chairs that he will be displaying are made of paper-like cloth, living crystals and plastic fibers baked in a kiln.
