Zapiro and Thierry Cassuto on satire and ZA News

ZA News is the result of a long-term collaboration between political cartoonist Jonathan Shapiro (aka Zapiro), and producer Thierry Cassuto.

The ZA News team describe the social and political factors that led to the creation of their satirical website. ZA News is a show that was initially made for South African television, but it didn't make it there, so instead it went online.

"We looked at the political material in 1998 and said 'Wow, there's a lot of material down here,'" say Zapiro and Cassuto.

Zapiro explains many of the obstacles that the team faced in trying to get the first episode broadcast.

The pair discuss how the power of the press and social media helped them to build up a loyal fanbase - thus enabling the series to be sponsored.

ZA News show examples of their satirical show, with puppets of Jacob Zuma, Julius Malema and Peter de Villiers. Finally, Desmond Tutu and Nelson Mandela take questions from the Design Indaba audience, live.
