Designing for the bigger picture with Van Eijk & Van der Lubbe

It’s all a matter of perception.

Dutch designer Miriam van der Lubbe, who together with her partner Niels van Eijk, heads up Van Eijk & Van der Lubbe, believes in designing for the bigger picture. Taking to the Design Indaba stage in March 2016, van der Lubbe talked us through the design firm’s success in a multitude of experience design projects.

Van Eijk & Van der Lubbe describe themselves as conceptual thinkers. They’re able to animate any space or product by creating meaningful designs. In one project, the team looked at what our experience of driving cars would be in the future. Commissioned by Volvo in the Netherlands, Experience In Motion sees our attention shift from the vehicle to the environment.

“We looked at the fun of driving,” says van der Lubbe. “There are people who like to drive on a Sunday afternoon and the technology is really changing. It’s taking away the pleasure, in fact, because you don’t have to do anything anymore. So how can we get pleasure out of driving in the future?”
