Over the past year, the Design Indaba website has undergone a radical overhaul. The website functions as a comprehensive design portal for news, videos, images, speaker presentations, projects, events and ecommerce and provides added value to sponsors in the events section. With already more than 3 000 pieces of content relating to the South African and international design industry, the website positions Design Indaba in the international arena as a powerful global player.

Designindaba.com received 58 181 visits from 01 Feb – 17 March 2010 and 39 227 unique visitors. People spend an average of 5 minutes on the site. The highest traffic was between 22 Feb and 28 Feb. The visitors are representative of 157 countries with the most traffic from South Africa, followed by the United States, United Kingdom, Germany, Netherlands, Canada, Australia, France and Brazil. The site received 23% direct traffic, 20.87% from referring sites and 55.34% through search engine traffic sources.

Design Indaba magazine and website

The designindaba.com strategy of taking the Design Indaba brand global, has grown directly out of the Design Indaba magazine strategy. The quarterly Design Indaba magazine was launched in 2001 and serves to spread the impact and values of the Design Indaba Conference and Expo throughout the year, reaching people who are unable to attend, reinforcing fraternity within the creative industries and increasing local consumer awareness of high-quality design.

Subscribers to the Design Indaba magazine are given premium permissions to access exclusive video and magazine content on the website. Comprising one-third of the magazine distribution, subscribers include past speakers, sponsors, partners, delegates and overall design fanatics. Further, some 2500 copies of the magazine are sold through retail outlets including flagship Woolworths shops, Exclusive Books and a number of other boutique outlets. 

The Design Indaba magazine is the only African magazine to win the Best Design for New Magazine Award at the Folio Show in New York and won gold again in the Open Category in 2005. In 2008 it won three international Tabbie awards as well as a Pica award for best cover. In 2009 it was included in Colophon’s Top 100 Most Innovative Magazines in the World.
