Reimagining the Lift Chair with Dignity and Design

Inspired by her father’s post-stroke recovery, designer Janet Feldman set out to transform the humble lift chair—a medical device often associated with clunky mechanics and clinical aesthetics—into an object of dignity, beauty and independence. The AWEChair brings comfort and care to the mobility and seating experience.

At first glance, the AWEChair resembles a luxurious armchair: premium upholstery, sculpted lines, and the quiet confidence of German-engineered precision. But beneath its elegant exterior lies an ingenious mechanism. Where traditional lift chairs push users forward with brute force, often causing instability, the AWEChair’s patented lift design gently elevates the seat while keeping feet firmly on the ground. A retractable footrest “scoops” the legs, supporting safe and graceful transitions from sitting to standing or reclining.

Every detail is intentional: recessed arm panel grips ensure stability; a built-in lumbar cushion promotes posture; and an under-knee bolster adds ergonomic comfort. An added safety curtain beneath the chair protects small pets and limbs from getting caught in the mechanism.

The AWEChair underlines the urgent need for dignified, design solutions for aging populations and those with limited mobility.
