War Horse at BASA Awards

Topthorn from War Horse will be making a special appearance at the Business Day BASA Awards next week.


The 14th annnual Business Day Business and Art South Africa (BASA) Awards takes plact on 29 August 2011 in Johannesburg. And Topthorn, the award-winning War Horse production, will be making a special appearance at the event.

War Horse’s puppet design and fabrication is the work of the Cape Town-based Handspring Puppet Company, under leadership of Adrian Kohler and Basil Jones. The duo were recenly honoured with a Tony Award for the creation of their large, very life-like puppets.

While the puppets have enjoyed much international recognition, War Horse has not been seen in South Africa. BASA CEO Michelle Constant says she hopes the Topthorn’s appearance at the award ceremony will ignite interest and support fot the puppets to that they might enjoy a future in South Africa.

The BASA Awards are suppprted by Anglo American and honours businesses that are actively involved n supporting and sponsoring arts and culture events in South Africa.

Handspring Puppet Company

The Handspring Puppet Company was founded in 1981 by Basil Jones and Adrian Kohler. Working out of Kalk Bay in Cape Town, the company’s original focus was the creation of new South African plays for children, followed by innovative educational work for TV.
