The average speed of a car in a city is about 11km/h and the average speed of a bicycle is about 15km/h. In Cairo, known as the noisiest city, this is particularly apparent where a car trip can take between 15 minutes and three hours for the same distance. To visualise this problem, architect Daniel Dendra created a table in which the surface modulation translates the soundscape of Cairo into a 3D landscape. The extreme surface modulation makes it impossible to put anything on top of the table, which refers to the fact that the urban environment of Cairo is almost impossible to navigate as a pedestrian.
