Candy and hotdog rocks

American Chateau features grandiose tongue-in-cheek works by Jaime Hayon and Nienke Klunder.


At first glance, the American Chateau works by Jaime Hayon and Nienke Klunder look like custom-made pieces for a 17th-century palace. However, on closer inspection it becomes clear that instead of heroic classical marble busts, pieces like Melting Virgin and the Rocking Hot Dog are more tongue-in-cheek than congratulatory. And then there’s Klunder’s Versailles-meets-Disneyland Big Rock Candy Mountains… Hayon and Klunder have collaborated since 2003 but American Chateau at Spring Projects in London was their first public collaborative exhibition.

Jaime Hayón

Spanish artist-designer Jaime Hayón was born in Madrid in 1974. As a teenager, he submerged himself in skateboard culture and graffiti art, which has formed the foundation of the detailed, bold-yet-whimsical imagery so imminent in his work today.
