SA fashion goes global at Design Indaba Expo

South Africa’s only independent fashion ramp, the 2010 Design Indaba Expo again promises a stellar line-up of newbies and show favourites.

South Africa’s only independent fashion ramp, the 2010 Design Indaba Expo again promises a stellar line-up – from show favourites Craig Native and Stiaan Louw to international stars such as Stoned Cherrie. Running from 26 to 28 February at the Cape Town International Convention Centre, Design Indaba Expo visitors are given unlimited access to the fashion arena. Click here for the full programme.

Dispelling the typically cool and detached fashion space, the DStv Event arena is a celebratory space. Besides the all-day fashion shows presented by ARISE magazine, a lounge area and designer Grolsch bar encourage relaxing socialising. A film festival of South African shorts, animations and music videos is interspersed between the fashion shows, and the day is capped by Pecha Kucha sessions in which leading South African creatives present their work in bite-size presentations.

Making a strong case for the global reach of SA’s industry, Stoned Cherrie will show just why they’re an international headliner. Not to mention Lalesso, who although Cape Town and Kenya based, are probably better known overseas than here at home.

But it’s not all glam and no business. As a carefully curated independent platform, the Design Indaba Expo fashion offering has found unique access to the international market that the Design Indaba attracts – including over 350 buyers with 160 of them from overseas. At the 2008 event, Darkie secured a R1.5-million order from Swiss department store Globus – and is still reeling. With dedicated buyers’ mornings, for the Design Indaba Expo fashion designers the real deal is what happens at their stands, not on the ramp.

The rest of the line-up comprises David Tlale, Hip Hop, SIN by Sandhya Lalloo, I Love Leroy and Soulchild, as well as the Cape Town Fashion Council roster – Craig Native, Undacova, Stiaan Louw and Jacoba. Also supported by the CTFC, are Trip Handbags, made from recycling vintage leather and accessories.

Seeking something unique and special, and vying for the edgy and creative, international and local buyers are sure to be thrilled with the cast of bold, alternative designers. Not to mention every consumer and visitor – come meet the fashion purveyors of the nation, in person, at their stands.  Click here for the full programme.

Fresh from sponsoring the ARISE African Collective Part III at New York Fashion Week, ARISE is proud to lend its name to the Design Indaba Expo fashion shows. ARISE, the first global style and cultural magazine to celebrate African achievement in the realms of fashion, music, culture, business and politiy, understands the importance of taking South African fashion and design to the world, and bringing global influences to Africa. This is their first fashion event on the continent for 2010, and one of many global fashion events they have planned for the year.
