Stiaan Louw's latest collection interrogates the artistic but atypical understanding of African design.

“6” is Stiaan Louw’s sixth and most definitive collection to date. Exploring notions of an African aesthetic and drawing inspiration from Africa as the Cradle of Humankind and various ethnic cultures, Louw’s work highlights contrasts.

Louw fuses Massai, Middle Eastern, Indian and Ancient Greek elements to create garments reminiscent of the Mesopotamian ideal. Emphasising the juxtapositions between wrapping, draping and structure, “6” combines a nomadic and colonial style for men.

The “6” campaign and collection plays with the idea of blending different styles. Louw asked four photographer to interpret the four different components of the collection in their own unique. The collection will be released at intervals over the next few months and will culminate in an event where the collection will be viewed in its entirety.

Pictured here are photographs from the first component “I am colonial, nomadic, I am African, I am Indian”. This part of the collection also deals with questions around what it means to be African.

The model for this campaign is Eric Bester from Boss with styling by Michael Cooper and hair and makeup by Laura Kingma, both from OneLeague.
