Steel bamboo at Milan2011

Nendo's "Bamboo Steel Chair" uses bamboo handicraft techniques but manages to create a hard metal sense of pilancy.

Japanese design studio Nendo have collaborated with Taiwanese craft initiative Yii to design the Bamboo Steel Chair, which will be exhibited at the Milan Furniture Fair from 12 to 17 April 2011.

For the design of the chair Nendo researched traditional Taiwanese bamboo handicrafts and furniture and then applied these techniques to a more modern material, tubular steel pipes.

Nendo chose to use the metal over the bamboo to illustrate how traditional techniques can easily be mass-produce, retaining quality in a contemporary context. For the chair’s seat bamboo handicraft techniques were used to weave thin sliced sections and joining parts, wrapping them around each other to give the chair the hard metal feeling.
