The World Cup has arguably been one of the most significant events to take place in South Africa in the past decade. Its legacy will be seen and felt in many different ways, also in a dynamic collection of photographic stories.
The Market Photo Workshop commissioned photojournalism and documentary photography students to travel the country in search of alternative narratives within the World Cup context.
The culmination is the exhibition World Cup Rural & Urban Photo Diary, which can be seen at the Market Photo Workshop Gallery in Newtown, Jo’burg, until 29 July 2010.
Photographers traveled as far as Coffee Bay in the Eastern Cape and as wide as eGalibasi village in KwaZulu-Natal. The work is presented in both print and digital form. The digital element of the exhibition has been divided into four themes that are updated daily: The Rural Space, The Urban Space, In the Frame and In Retrospect.
