A new commandment

Michael Bierut has designed a series of humorous, playful and lively signs for the Cathedral Church of Saint John in New York City.

For the annual St. Francis Day Blessing of the Animals held at the Cathedral Church of Saint John, Pentagram partner Bierut has created a new set of commandments. The signage is well-fitted to the area as the Cathedral grounds are a popular spot for walking dogs in the neighbourhood. With the signage, visitors are encountered with light-hearted sayings such as “thou shalt not poop”, “hold close thy love” and “collect what you receive”.

The signs use the same identity that was developed for the institution, which employs the custom font Devine, a redrawn version of Frederic Goudy’s 1928 Blackletter.

The signs will serve as a permanent addition to the grounds.
