Using Birch wood and bright copper connectors Giulia Odendaal of Leg Studios has designed a honeycomb-like shelving system that is both decorative and functional.
Delicate and filigree-like, the connectors bolt the timber shelves together to create a modular shelving system, which can be easily self-assembled in a variety of forms such as a side table, server unit and full shelving system. Made of electroplated steel, the connecting pieces give a highly polished antidote to the raw wooden shelves.
Odendaal comes from a theatre background designing sets for productions, so making furniture is a new venture for her. She and her partners at Leg Studios, architect Leon Erasmus and industrial designer Tim Richert, also create experiential installations for brands. Their most recent installation was for the J&B Met VIP marquee.
For its new self-initiated range, Leg Studios has experimented with different substrates and textures. The “Shop” collection includes laser-cut steel finished in bright polished copper, brass and dark chrome and layered over materials such as concrete, ply and exotic woods. Leg Studios launched its copper range at Design Indaba Expo 2015.
