2010 Most Beautiful Object in SA announced

What is beautiful to you? Voted for by visitors to the Design Indaba Expo, the Most Beautiful Object in South Africa is...

They say that beauty is in the eye of the beholder. Although a timeless cliché, it is one that to this day still holds a great deal of truth. It is for this reason that for Design Indaba’s Most Beautiful Object in South Africa (MBOISA), we did not ask, “What is beautiful?” but instead “What is beautiful to you?”

So what is beautiful to you? The simplistic, minimalist and definable or the unexplainable, the breath taking and indescribable? The finalist were chosen ranging from the W-Table by Frank Bohm and the Polyhedra Modular Coffee Table System by Haldane Martin to the bookHandspring Puppet Company by David Krut Publishing and the Ostrich Barstool by Tsai Design Studio.

But there can only be one. Votes were cast via SMS and South Africa has chosen what it beautiful to them. The Design Indaba Most Beautiful Object in South Africa 2010 is Anatomy Design's Lab Light.

Created out of a fascination with utilitarian equipment, the Lab Light exists on the borders of engineering and design, using the functionality of laboratory equipment and harnessing the beauty within it. Constructed out of black steel and solid spun brass, this object portrays functional aesthetic with a touch of nostalgia.

Anatomy Design not only gets to hold the title for the Most Beautiful Object in South Africa, but will also get 6sqm at next year’s Design Indaba, ensuring that everyone who voted will get a chance to celebrate this worthy accolade.

MBOISA, now in its fifth year, celebrates the diversity of designers, design studios, crafts and products that are continuously present in the South African creative industry. Held annually alongside Design Indaba, the winner is selected by the public meaning that each year the idea of beauty can be redefined allowing the creative landscape to evolve and give rise to a new kind of beautiful every year.
