How We Wear Ours:
An exhibition on jeans culture in contemporary South Africa.

A group of young South African creatives were briefed with creating a visual exhibition that looks at jeans culture in South Africa for global brand G-Star RAW.

Global denim brand G-Star RAW is working with local artists to explore South Africa’s jeans culture in a pop-up exhibition in Braamfontein Johannesburg. Opening on Thursday 1 October for three days, the exhibition “How We Wear Ours” will showcase the work of Cape Town and Johannesburg-based illustrators, photographers and stylists, looking at their interpretation of jeans culture in South Africa and their response to the G-Star SS15 campaign question “How do you wear yours?”

The SA creatives involved in the project include Anthony Bila, Gabrielle Kannemeye, Jade Klara, photographer and film maker Trevor Stuurman, Smiso Zwane (also known as the rapper and artist Okmalumkoolkat) and photographer Paul Ward.

The young South African creatives were briefed with interpreting the campaign slogan in their own unique way. Words like “badass”, “lived in” and “low slung” all came up in their responses.

The exhibition will take place at the Kalashnikovv Gallery in Braamfontein, Johannesburg, and is curated by the gallery’s owners Murray Turpin and Matthew Dowdle.
