Book Works is a London-based visual arts publisher, established in 1984. For over 30 years, the studio has collaborated with designers, artists and various organisations to publish books that stretch the imagination and transcend any set notions about book design.
Working with form, material and now the latest technologies in publishing and design, bookmaker Rob Hadrill discusses how Book Works materialises ideas into visual art.
Book Works is split into a standard publishing house and a design studio, which involves commissions and special editions for artists, galleries, design companies or special editions. Hadrill sees the studio as a platform for “introducing design ideas and making books that don’t look like the other books you see around.”
From gold leafing and leathers to acrylics and metals, Hadrill says that the materials and leathers they work with vary from traditional to contemporary and are subject to the nature of the project.
