This urban designer tracks down where the energy in our cities comes from

Could her singing manhole covers advocate for energy systems and the humans who use them?

From the Series

At the first-ever antenna, Rhode Island School of Design graduate Kelsey Wakefield introduced the audience to a speculative project that hopes to humanise energy and energy systems by making the underground pressure points of those systems play music.

Her project, Grid Talk: Giving a voice to energy infrastructures, traces the New England power system, New York State independent system and its ties to New York City, and the older system, the New York Steam System.

Not only does her project shed light on the underground systems that feed the North America but it also questions the designer’s place in energy advocacy.
