In isiXhosa, Awundiboni has two meanings. It either means you are reducing me to nothing or that you do not see me. Thandiwe Msebenzi, who studies at the UCT Michaelis School of Fine Art, uses this word to explore the concept of rape culture.
Through photographs that feature the different weapons that women like her mom and grandmother keep under their beds, Thandiwe brings the experiences closer to her audience. She also revealed that she is working on a VR public installation that will try and bring the experience and conversation around rape culture into the public domain.
In this interview Thandiwe expands a bit more on her work.
