Dirk van der Kooij on 3D printing and recycling

Dirk van der Kooij taught a robot to make comfortable chairs using 3D printing techniques and recycled plastic from discarded fridges.

For his graduation project Dirk van der Kooij created the Endless range of plastic chairs. The Design Academy Eindhoven graduate uses the plastic from discarded fridges to create chairs that are both comfortable and attractive.

Refrigerators are great for recycling because the innards are made of one big chunk of polystyrene. When you get it out it can be shredded and reused because the white is good for recolouring, says Van der Kooij.

To reduce the cost of labour for realising this project, Van der Kooij taught a robot to make the chairs, using 3D printing techniques.
