Stackable chair

David Chipperfield’s stackable folding chair “Piana” for Alessi has been selected to the The Museum of Modern Art’s collection.

Update: The “Piana” ALESSICHAIR has been selected for inclusion in the collection of the Musuem of Modern Art in New York.

At the Milan Furniture Fair, taking place from 12 to 17 April 2011, Alessi will be presenting a new project by British architect David Chipperfield.

Originally created for the company Lamm, Piana is a new folding chair that is easily stackable. Made from polypropylene and reinforced with fibreglass, the chair signals an interesting move for the kitchenware company into the realm of furniture.

The display at Milan2011 where the chair can be viewed was also conceived by Chipperfield, who turned it into a vibrant showcase for Italian design. The Piana, which is also know as the Alessichair, has anti-slip surfaces and works well as a set, but probably finds its niche in small, contemporary living spaces.

Available in white, black traffic, pebble grey, patina green, raspberry red and saffron yellow, the chair weighs 4.8kg. The seat also has a synchronised opening and closing system that rotates about a single point.
