The 12th biannual Antalis South African Art of Design Awards were recently held in Johannesburg with no less than 750 pieces entered.

While the Art of Design competition recognises graphic design excellence and originality, it also aims to inspire big thinking and big ideas. With a keen focus on creative paper usage and interesting, beautiful presentation, the competition is Antalis’s way of supporting the growth of the local graphic design industry.

A panel of nine judges based their decisions on a number of design criteria. These included, whether or not the design solved a problem and added value; its level of creativity, innovation or originality; and level of impact, asking the question of whether there was “magic”?

Categories for entry ranged from cards and unbound brochures to corporate identity and annual reports. The much coveted overall Grand Prix prize was awarded to Paul Hinch, Shelley Atkinson, Jean du Plessis and Marette Koorts of Grid Worldwide for "Slow Corporate Identity".

The 2010 student category, which had 80 entries, aimed to provide students with the unique tools needed to learn the art of typography. The 2010 student winner was Cally Tarin May from Greenside Design Centre.
